I began working with Alexys in January 2013 after having taken a long hiatus from vocal performance. I participated in choir throughout high school and performed in numerous talent shows during that time, but had received no formal training. When I began college, I auditioned for a campus a cappella group and was not accepted, which dampened my confidence enough to take me out of the world of singing for years. I treasure Alexys for a multitude of reasons but most because of the way in which he has heavily invested in my artistic development over the last three years and never allowed me to slip back into a place where I doubted my talent. I've told him many times that often, what he sees as my future in music is bigger and better than anything that I might allow myself to imagine. His unshakeable belief in me has been one of the biggest drivers of my achievement and steady progress. During my first lesson with Alexys, he asked me whether I sang soprano or alto to which I confidently replied that I was an alto; alto was the part I had sung in choral groups for years and years. As the lesson progressed, he stopped me and shared with me that he was certain that I was actually a solid soprano. From that point forward, he focused a part of my lesson on unlocking my upper register, which I had spent no time engaged with as I assumed I did not have the ability to sing higher notes. Now, three years later, I have a vocal range that I would never have imagined possible when I first began. In addition, my voice was quite light and had little strength to it. Each time we met for a lesson - even to this day - Alexys focused his coaching with me on establishing and enhancing chest voice foundation. I also appreciate Alexys' ability to explain why a technique is important and how strengthening particular parts of the voice will improve other parts. For example, as mentioned, when I first began working with Alexys, my voice was not particularly strong. Alexys worked with me to demonstrate how strengthened and supported singing is helpful to employ for both the higher and lower register of my vocal range. He is exceptionally skilled at being able to diagnose the root causes of a spectrum of singing challenges. I have asthma and bronchitis which often can make sustained singing difficult for me often because my breathing is normally quite shallow. Alexys was able to identify that challenge early on and support me to practice the type of breathing necessary to sing powerfully. Alexys is also a proponent of natural medicines to support the full-body which enhances vocal health and shares these with his students. I have participated in both individual vocal lessons with Alexys and also, in a number of the Advanced Vocal Performance workshops that he offers. The workshop setting was integral to my transition from "vocalist" to "vocal performer". Alexys structured the class to allow for a designated number of preparatory sessions which culminated in a performance, always at established venues in San Francisco. Because of the industry relationships that Alexys has established, I can say that I have performed in historic spaces such as San Francisco's Hotel Utah and The Brick and Mortar Music Hall. In addition, again due to Alexys' relationships, I have had the opportunity to work with some of the Bay Area's top and most in-demand musicians. As we prepared for each performance, Alexys expanded his coaching not only to include advanced vocal technique work but also incorporated key performance strategies. When anyone watches footage from my performances in chronological order, they always comment on the steady improvement of my vocal technique but more so, my stage presence. When I first begin Alexys' workshop classes, I was the person who would run off the stage the second that I was finished, who wouldn't make eye contact with the audience, and whose voice would shake during the song. During my second workshop class that I took with Alexys, he asked me to take on three songs and to both open and close the show. Up to that point, I had not demonstrated an ability to present confidently onstage but once again, Alexys saw something in me that I did not see myself and created an opportunity for me to grow into the vision he had for me. That was a turning point. I knew that I needed to show up differently and Alexys supported me each step of the way to do so. Following that performance, my family and friends could not believe the progress I had made. That performance marked the point at which I began to love the stage rather than fear it. As noted in the examples above, Alexys equipped me with the vocal technique and performance exposure to approach singing with confidence and ambition. He has taught me that singing is a true lifestyle and encouraged me to commit the necessary time and effort to produce the desired results. This year, I was accepted to participate as an artist-in-residence two highly selective residencies for songwriting and music - one in France and one in Italy. Three years ago, I would have laughed out loud were someone to prophecy that I would have been extended these opportunities. When I first started working with Alexys, my only goal was to be able to successfully sing a song live and in front of an audience without backing out at the last minute. Leilani is passionate about singing and has been performing before she began classes with Alexys Paris last Summer 2013. Alexys is her first professional vocal coach. His in-depth knowledge of vocal techniques, clear instructions, patience, and encouraging words are helping Leilani know and understand her voice, protect her vocal cords, expand her range, and reach her fullest potential. First and foremost I would like to take a second to express my gratitude to the Almighty for bringing us Alexys Paris. As a mother like most parents out there, one can be a bit paranoid when it comes to finding someone that you would hope to trust from online. And when my sister-in-law chose Alexys Paris over many Vocalists online and told me how an EXCELLENT TEACHER he was, I immediately put my daughter in, and although we’ve only been with Alexys since last year, it feels like we’ve known each other, well, like forever. When I first started taking vocal lessons with Alexys in 2011, I didn’t know what to expect. The techniques he taught me were foreign to what I had been exposed to before. As the lessons and classes progressed, I began to notice a more pronounced sound and quality to my voice and all of the techniques were falling into place. In the private lessons, Alexys works extensively with me on areas that he feels could use some improvement and allows me the freedom ask plenty of questions when I need clarification. The group classes allow for freedom of expression both in song choice and vocal ability. I have done both private lessons and a group performance class with Alexys and I’m very happy about my choice. I had never had vocal lessons before I began taking them with Alexys. I was uncomfortable with my voice and unsure about how to use it. He proved to be patient and knew exactly how to address the weaknesses and how to capitalize on the strengths in it. His ability to relate to me and put things in a way I could understand helped me advance faster than I ever imagined I would, and because of that I have been able to do things with my voice I have only heard singers on the radio do! If you are looking for a voice instructor in the San Francisco Bay Area, I highly recommend Alexys. I also recommend a group performance class because of the transformational process. Alexys works with all range levels from beginners to professional singers and performers, and he helps us all reach our goals. When I first started with Alexys in December 2014, I had no experience or training in singing. I remember telling Alexys at my first session that it took thirty years for me to arrive at a voice studio to fulfill my dream of learning to sing well. Since working with Alexys, I have gained confidence, increased my range, and improved my tone. Furthermore, I listen to songs differently -- paying attention to the connection between chest and head voice. During individual lessons, I do exercises that strengthen my vocal cords and help me bridge from chest to head voice. In mixed-level group performance classes, I work on songs that I pick and perform. With Alexys's support, I have figured out my tendencies, and he instructs me through them. I enjoy modifying consonant and vowel sounds in songs and practicing parts of songs until they become familiar in the body. I am struck by how performers sound at the beginning and at end of a voice class. The process is truly transformational. Without a doubt, I followed Alexys to his new studio in Emeryville where students come to from all over the Bay Area: San Francisco, Oakland, Mountain View, and San Jose. I highly recommend Alexys for voice lessons. I’ve been taking lessons with him a little over 3 months and I have learned so much in such a short time. This testimony is so very easy to write because there are so many reasons why I owe Alexys Paris, my newly thriving career in show business. – JJ I began acting and singing a little over a year ago and after getting my first lead role as a new actor, it was recommended that I find a vocal coach if I wanted to strengthen my opportunity to grow in this industry. I searched over and over, testing voice coach after voice coach until I came across Alexys’ website. I had no idea that the moment I stepped into his studio, for my first lesson, that it would start a chain of events and milestone growth that would give me the skills in such a short time to obtain lead roles in my next 4 auditions. I highly recommend Alexys and the SLS approach. I have worked with him for almost a year and have noticed a drastic change in my voice. I have always wanted to sing and have never been able to. Studying voice with Alexys has been transformational for me. He has provided a nonjudgemental supportive environment where I am able to learn and explore vocal techniques. I was raised by an opera singer who taught voice out of the house I grew up in. Needless to say I’ve been pretty particular about who I study voice with, and when I was lucky enough to connect with Alexys Paris I knew I’d found someone who could build upon what I knew to explore a whole new direction for me. I felt good about my baritone voice, but with Alexys I’ve been able to expand my repertoire beyond that range and learn better habits at the mic and in front of a room.
